Today, we all went on Via dell'Amore, the hiking trail along side the coast in between Manarola, the town we are in, and Riomaggiore, the southernmost village of the 5 villages. GORGEOUS!!!
| Via dell'Amore is in the foreground and the city in the back is Manarola, where we are staying. |
Georgie had a great time on the walk as long as we were moving. He would just start talking and squealing at random times!
| This is Riomaggiore, where we walked around for a few hours. |
In Riomaggiore, we were particularly struck by how well the residents of the village utilize the small plots of land they have. They have so many plants and trees on just a few feet of ground.
This older Italian man reminded me of Grandpa Meola. Dan & Bethany, this was taken for you all. The two of you have really taken a page out of the Italian book and I am so inspired by your and these Italians attitude towards gardening. We want to have a garden even more now!
Georgie having a ball in the village flirting with all the people and enjoying all of the views.
See Mom and Dad, they have the plant you all bought each other!
Look how crafty this person was. They grew a grapevine out of a tiny hole in the cobblestone and then trained it to go over their balcony. Awesome!
We ate a light yummy lunch right on the trail itself at a restaurant that had tables on the cliffside.
After we came back to the village, we enjoyed some gelato and relaxed for the rest of the day. For dinner we picked up some meats, cheeses, pesto and fruit at the market. All were delicious but the ricotta was amazing. It was fresh and neither of us had ever tasted anything like this! Now I think we may try making ricotta when we are back in the US....
We are off to Torino tomorrow!

Your pictures are just amazing...it truly does look as beautiful as it sounds.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful it was to see you both this afternoon.... what a great surprise!
I forgot to mention that this morning I went shopping at Trader Joe's and picked up some coffee ice cream in your honor. It really is DELICIOUS and I may or may not be eating a second bowl at this moment... you were right! :)
I agree with Caitlin about the pictures. I wish I could make each one bigger so I could look at it in more detail! I can't believe how blue the water is. Giorgio looks so happy =)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the gardening photo! That man does remind me of Grandpa Meola. (By the way - sorry for sticking bad news in here - both Grandpa and Grandma Meola have been in and out of the hospital lately, and the drs say Grandma has maybe 2-4 months left because her cancer has come back in full force. Could you say some prayers for their health?)
So did Caitlin and Steve visit you in Italy?!?! Just kidding - although I've been meaning to tell them that some guy at mass last week (an Esto Vir alum - forget his name) told us that they were in Italy!! We could only hope it was true =)
Keep having wonderful Italian adventures!!!!
Sorry - I meant to mention too that we've made homemade ricotta and it's super yummy and easy! Totally worth it. We got the kit from the New England Cheesemaking Company.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are having an amazing time! I love the Cinque Terra so much. Miss you and Giorgio!
